Remember the Book Sale

The Friends of the Dubuque County Library used book sale starts today (Thursday, April 26) at 2:00 p.m. and continues until 7:30 tonight at Silker's Pavilion in Epworth.  Friday hours are 12:00 to 7:30 and Saturday from 8:00 to 11:00 am.  There are lots and lots of books, VHS tapes,  and books on tape for sale at incredibly low prices.  If you fill one of our plastic grocery sacks, you can take it away for only $3.00!!

All of the money goes to the Friends organization which supports library projects.  Friends is funding the library's summer reading program and every child who meets their reading goals for the month of July will receive a free, new paperback book.  What better reward for reading than your own brand new book?  We have purchased books for preschool children through teens.

Speaking of summer reading, registration for our Read @ Home program begins May 29th.  Our summer reading brochure should be ready next week so you can see all the fun activities we have planned.

Mark your calendar for a very special event on Friday, June 8th.  Sharon Peterson will be bringing live Egyptian fruit bats for two programs.  Come at 10:00 to our Asbury branch or at 2:00 in Holy Cross or come to both!!  I know that my grandson is counting the days.  He and his mother are fascinated by bats.  Bats are important members of our ecosystem and they are threatened by loss of habitat and disease.  Also, seeing this amazing creatures up close might help you overcome your fear of bats.  I am definitely hoping it helps me.  You will learn a lot by listening to Sharon.  She is also doing the same program in the evening at the Swiss Valley Nature Center.  This is one you can't miss.

This Saturday our children's programmer, Elisha Blakeman, is offering a special gardening story time from 3:30 to 4:30 at our Asbury branch.  Children will hear stories, sing songs, and take home their own plant.  This is a great way to get kids interested in gardening and learning about where their food come from.  Remember the farmer's market opens the following weekend in downtown Dubuque.  Elisha will present a repeat program on Wednesday, May 9th at 2:00 at our Epworth branch.

I am currently attending the Distinctively Dubuque newcomer class offered by NICC and the Greater Dubuque Development Corporation.  What a great idea.  I am learning all kinds of information.  I now know where to find the best Chinese food in town, that Al Capone really did stay at the Julien during the late 20s, and where the nearest beach is on the Mississippi (Findley's Landing) operated by the Dubuque County Conservation department.  And did you know that the arboreteum has free music on Sundays in the summer? How cool is that?  More updates as the class continues . . .

After you come to the book sale, I hope you have a lovely weekend.
